Tsundoku : Buying Books, an Addiction
A friend used to say, he buys books because they look pretty on his shelf. At that I point I would scoff and ridicule him because then I only bought books I wanted to read and I completed most of them. There were very few then that were unfinished and none that were unopened.
Over the last couple of years the books that are unfinished and the ones that are unopened have increased on my shelves and I still continue to buy more. In the last year I have read a cumulative of five books and started 2-3 more but I have probably bought close to 30. I have no room on my shelves but I continue to buy more. I wonder what the reason is because it feels like an addiction that when I see a bookstore, I need to buy a book.
By researching a little online, found out that there is actually a term for it, its called "tsundoku" ( https://www.bbc.com/news/world-44981013 ) .
There are also blogs to kick this habit so maybe I need to read some of them so that I don't keep piling them and actually start reading them. As I type that, I have 3 new books that I bought sitting next to me on a shelf and one in my bag which I have been trying to read for months. What should I start and what should I finish ? Whatever it is, I need to finish one book this month for book club so lets see which one it is.
