Bride and Prejudice

I expected a lot more from Gurinder Chadha since I really liked Bend it Like Beckham but this movie was a huge disappointment. It was forced comedy with typical stereotypes that made me as an Indian cringe. I understand a lot of mothers envision their daughters getting married to an NRI and settling down in the land of opportunities but this was just pushed to a limit where you wanted to slap the parent and say, come back to your senses.

Forget Chadha and her attempt at slapstick comedy, she took a wonderful book and then mangled it into something ridiculous. I think she should have created her own random story instead of taking one of the best classics. Also Darcy, a hero that a lot of girls fantasise about seemed completely out of place and at times pathetic. If she really wanted to be true to the book, instead of picking a guy who looked like a chocolate book hero, she should have picked one with some attitude and arrogance.

The only surprise in the moviewas Aishwarya Rai. I have never been a big fan of hers but she was fairly good as an independent Elizabeth Bennett or as they called her Lalita. She obviously was still plastic in her acting but in the melee of really bad actors she seemed to stand out as a little better then the rest. Anupam Kher was definitely a waste as her father. He was impressive as the angry Punjabi father in Bend it like Beckham but his talents were wasted in this movie.

In conclusion this movie was a dismal show and I wasted 3 hours of my sleep time watching it. In future I think Chadha should stick to her original ideas instead of trying to make an adaptation of something so beautiful as a classic story.
