Americanized English
Maybe this is just the Midwest influence but the bastardized version of the English language that you hear does not seem to amaze me. Most of my colleagues and people I interact with use this form of language.
The common phrases I have heard and which tend to stick around are "what you got", "I didn't do nothing" and "where you are at”.
Seriously "what you got”!!...In a one hour meeting I heard this phrase being used every 2min so I lost count but have they not heard of "what you have" or "what do you have" depending on how "what you got" is used.
"I didn't do nothing"...Out of all the things my English grammar teacher taught me, one thing I remember is you never put two negatives together because it just makes it positive.” I didn't do nothing" just means "I did something".
"Where you are at"...I have no words for that.
Besides this supplementing any word with "like" or "you know what I am talking about" seems to be the common trait amongst most people. I thought like was something that 16yr old girls used but from what I hear around me it seems to be the easiest way to convey information when your vocabulary does not support your thoughts.
I should not be not be complaining because I seem to be joining the bandwagon and using similar language, without any sort of punctuation or grammar. You know what I am sayin.....its like this ....
